Tracking the Results of SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most challenging and exciting elements in modern business marketing because, by its very nature, it is a job that is never complete. For that reason, the practice of tracking results and finding what strategies do and do not work for your business is incredibly important.

There are three types of traffic to be watching for:

Direct Traffic

This is traffic coming from return users of your website who either type out your URL or have your site bookmarked.

Referral Traffic

This is all users coming from other websites that have linked to you.

Search Traffic

This is traffic coming directly from search engines.

Why track these separately?

Many businesses attempted to merely track their web analytics based solely on how many times their site was accessed. However, this neglects crucial information required to run a successful SEO campaign.

Tracking each form of traffic separately does two things: Firstly, it shows your website’s strengths and weaknesses so that you can focus your attention on what is most needed. Secondly, it shows what strategies work and which do not for your business.

For instance, say you wanted to increase your search engine ranking through a link building campaign, so you paid a local blog to review your business. This should have two effects: to boost the referral traffic (those reading the blog and coming to your site) and search traffic (as a consequence of a better search engine ranking).

From this separated data, you are able to see how successful your link building campaign was as opposed to confusing it with the users who became interested in your business merely from reading the review. This allows you to know, for the future, what mechanisms have a history of success for your business.
